Independent stories for Gen X women

Life after 45 was not in the script.

The Story Project

We’re listening

Tell us what happened

Your plot twist belongs in the story.

We are collecting honest stories from Gen X women about the moments nobody prepared us for—funny, painful, ordinary, ridiculous or all four before lunch.

What we are looking for

A specific moment is more powerful than an entire autobiography. Tell us about the adult child who moved back, the friendship that changed, the job you left, the parent you began caring for, the trip that reset something, the body change nobody explained or the quiet decision that made life feel like yours again.

A useful starting length is 300–1,000 words. It does not need to be polished. You can also send the story as bullet points and tell us you would prefer an interview.

Include these details

  • Your story and why it matters to you now.
  • Your first name and age or age range. Your city or region is optional.
  • How you would want to be credited: full name, first name, pseudonym or anonymous.
  • Whether anyone else in the story would need identifying details changed.
  • The best email address for an editor to contact you.

Before you send it

Only share information you are comfortable sending by email. Please do not include account numbers, passwords, private medical records or another person’s sensitive personal information.

Sending a story gives our editors permission to read and consider it; it does not give us permission to publish it. If we are interested, we will contact you about editing, fact-checking, identification and explicit publication permission. Submission does not guarantee publication or payment.

We may suggest changing identifying details to protect you or other people. We will never present an editorial composite as your personal account.

You do not need a dramatic ending. Sometimes the plot twist is simply realizing you are not the only one.
